Andrew James is a pianist based in Melbourne, Australia. He currently freelances in many performance projects, and arranges and composes for many of them. He teaches and works as an accompanist in many schools, and privately. Andrew graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Music and from Monash University with a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours. His research covered work of tango pianist and composer Julian Peralta. Andrew studied with Hernan Possetti in Buenos Aires and Cuban music in Havana with Felix Varona and Jesus Rubalcaba. Andrew was awarded an Artist Development Grant from the Australian Council of the Arts to study at the North American workshop ‘Tango for musicians’ in 2016 with Ramiro Gallo, Hernan Possetti and Ignacio Varchausky. He returned in 2017 and 2018 to study the specialist tango arranging track of the course and perform in Portland and Seattle with quartet ‘Lunes Noche’. Andrew has performed at WOMADelaide, Queenscliff Music Festival, The Australian World Music Expo, Perth Fringe Festival, Alice Springs Desert Arts Festival, Melbourne Spiegeltent, jazz clubs in Melbourne and numerous arts festivals across Victoria. Andrew has become an in demand pianist and plays with the award winning band Quarter Street, and freelances with groups Los Cabrones, Yudi’s Jewish Orchestra, The Melbourne Tango Orchestra, El Barrio, Calle Luna, the Ken Schroder Big Band, La Busca and as a busy piano accompanist.
